Customer Spotlight:
Did you know White Spruce Ventures provides technical writing services to one of the largest renewable energy companies in the industry? Over the past year, we have developed standardized Plant Operating Manuals for over 30 Landfill Gas to Energy sites and Gas Recovery Sites in North America. These manuals include Plant Process and System Descriptions, Electrical and Mechanical Alignments, as well as standard operating procedures for Startup and Shutdown of each site.
Each Landfill Gas to Energy site uses the naturally-occurring landfill (methane) gas to either power homes and businesses or to create High BTU Gas. The process also removes harmful methane from the environment, reducing odors and other hazards associated with LFG emissions while also preventing methane from migrating into the atmosphere and contributing to local smog and global climate change.
Landfill gas (LFG) is a natural byproduct of the decomposition of organic material in landfills, composed of roughly 50 percent methane (the primary component of natural gas), 50 percent carbon dioxide (CO2) and a small amount of non-methane organic compounds. Instead of escaping into the air or being flared off by a landfill flare skid, the gas is collected and pumped to the plant via a collection system, consisting of a series of extraction wells that are drilled into the landfill. The wells are connected to the plant by a piping system that supplies the raw gas by a landfill gas header.
At the Landfill Gas to Energy sites, the gas is then dewatered, filtered, and compressed by a Plant Fuel Gas Compressor before being routed to the generator sets to be burned as fuel gas and generate electricity. The Gas Recovery sites create Renewable Natural Gas (a high-Btu gas) through treatment processes by increasing its methane content and, conversely, reducing its CO2, nitrogen and oxygen contents. The gas can then be used in place of fossil natural gas as pipeline-quality gas, compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG).
